Hello,
I'm a new Mac mini user and when I called Rogers to help me set up the settings for Mail I was told that they didn't support it.
I can't receive or send mail.
Help?
Thanks,
Maria.
Shame on Rogers/Primustel (Sympatico too!). It's ridiculous that as large a company as Rogers, the guys who will probably, egads, host the iPhone when it comes to Canada, cannot manage so simple a task as helping you set up mail on a Mac mini!
Whenever you launch Mail for the first time, it launches a helper application that, based on a few simple questions, will walk you through your mail setup. Here's what you need to know to do it yourself.
- You need to set the Account Type to POP.
- You need to enter the User Name Rogers has assigned you - the part of your email address before the "@" sign.
- You also need to enter the password Rogers has assigned your account.
- You should also know the names of the incoming (POP) and outgoing (SMTP) mail servers - something that looks like "mail.primus.ca" or "pop.rogers.com".
Enter all this info and, well, it should start up your account.
If you've already tried this, but need to start over, you need to do two things to "reset" the mail helper. Starting with your hard drive, open the following folder: Hard Drive/Users/
yourusername/Library. In the Library folder is a Mail folder - discard it- the whole folder. Then, in the following folder: Hard Drive/Users/
yourusername/Library/Preferences, discard the file called "com.apple.mail.plist".
Start the Mail program after doing this and the helper will, well, help you. The basic info that you need to supply about server names should be somewhere in the Rogers instructions - if not you may have to - eek - call them and ask them for that specific info. You can usually find the same info buried in the 80 pages of instructions for Windoze users.
Good Luck and let us know how it goes....

It's a little old, but I think the steps are the same.
Latest info says that your User Name should now be your whole email address, i.e. "yourname@rogers.com". Rogers also requires SMTP authentication for sending mail.
To fix this, either run the helper again (after deleting the files mentioned previously) and enter the new info, or open Mail->Preferences and click Accounts from the top of the window. Click your account from the list on the left (may only be one account!), and choose Account Information from the pane on the right. Change your User Name to "yourname@rogers.com". Then click the "Server Settings..." button at the bottom of the Account Information pane. Another pane will slide out and here you have to select "Password" from the Authentication menu, and enter your User Name ("yourname@rogers.com") and the same password you use for your outgoing mail server - your Rogers email password.
This should get you going. If it doesn't - there's one more odd thing you might try. Where you set the Authentication user name - enter it as "yourname%rogers.com", i.e. use a percent sign in place of the "at" symbol.
Let us know how it goes!
