Title: New Mac User ?
Post by: Phoenix on April 25, 2005, 03:11:04 PM
Hi MUGOO,

This message is for the technical advisor or any nice knowledgeable person asking for some advice..........

I have a Dell Dimension XPS 4100 (P3, 800 MHz) which I bought in 2000.

Had lots of trouble with it from hard drive to freezing up to cursor going crazy, service transferred to India where most help desk personnel were not knowledgeable enough to help out..........

I'm contemplating of either upgrading my system or bying a whoe new DELL 3000 system for about $600 or do a complete switch to the Apple side with the Mac Mini........

All I know is that Mac is more reliable since it uses the UNIX OS.........but expensive...........gonna lose all my MS software........and won't be in step with the market.....

So any advice on what my next move should be?

If the answer is leaning toward a biased Apple, then what happens if the company goes bankrupt?

What are the necessary upgrades that need to be asked for when purchasing the basic Mac.......if any?

Has anyone tried both worlds...........MS, Windows , and Macintosh?

Is there a need to install a sound card in the Mac mini?

Any advice on a good ISP?

Tried Sympatico and Rogers........not too pleased with any of them.....

What about Magma or Sonic ( $30 for High Speed with free modem)?

Thanks.

Have a nice day.

Just a little note..apple i doubt will go abankrupt. i am a television student and rely on our mac and apple software to get through the day..so do the majority of television stations and production companys.  Also i suggest mac..for me anyway it has improved my computing life. faster more realiable..and in the last 5 months since i got my mac..i havent had any virus;s or any syware attacks on it.

Apple has been in business for over 25 years.  Don't worry about them going bankrupt.  And over its entire history, this is unquestionably the best time to be getting into the Mac.

You do not need to install a "sound card" into the Mini... it contains everything you will need, out of the box.

re: Mac Mini
I would probably wait a couple of weeks until they all come with Tiger pre-loaded, and I hear that they might start to ship with 512Mb standard.
It only has one RAM slot: if it still only comes standard with 256, get the 512 to make OS X happy.
I don't think that there are any "Customer-Installable Parts" for the Mac Mini.
You may want to decide if you want Apple's Bluetooth module and Wireless networking module when you place your order. Can local Apple dealers order and install these parts if not installed at the time of purchase?

Geez, I havent seen one of those "Apple going bankrupt" comments in a while. Since they're selling the iPods as fast as they can make them ( 10 million +), and all of the competitors products are mostly crap, they should be OK for quite a while.

Microsoft has problems with Longhorn, and Intel has gone silent with chip speed announcements.Apple has all the buzz these days.

bankrupt, hahaha, my uncle has been telling me that for the last 10 yrs, and Ive always told him wrong... they are doing better then ever, Im surprised people are still concerned about that!?

mike- as for the bluetooth, if you want it installed internally, it must be done at the time of purchase through apple (custom order), otherwise you must buy an external usb bluetooth adapter, like d-link has one, which takes up one usb port.

i noticed though if you have both bluetooth and an airport card installed at the time of purchase, it is much cheaper than buying them later on and individually (i guess they give you a bit of incentive), so best to do it at the time of purchase. Again though i believe you must go through Apple, it is a custome order.

Sorry jessin but i need to correct you... there is a way of adding bluetooth after you purchased a mac mini.... there is a bluetooth/wifi kit you can get to install inside your mac mini....i know becuase i have held it in my hands... your right tho mike there are no user replaceable parts as per apple..but a simple putty knife pushed into the sides of the mac mini from the bottom and a little prying you can open it up quite easily...once you have it open the ram slot is right there, swap out the ram and if you want to change the HDD just get any laptop HDD. all you have to do is remove the media drive from the assembly and change out the drive...its quite easy... at that time if you are able to order a superdrive from a service depo you can change it out yourself...very simple stuff.
