Title: Dashboard widgets disappear
Post by: Cyril on February 08, 2008, 02:38:24 PM
I have an odd problem on Dashboard: all the widgets are gone.  When I try to re-install them from the tray at the bottom of the screen (after clicking the (+)), they draw, then crash and disappear before any content appears.

I first noticed this on my son's account (which has parental control on) but it also happens on admin-enabled accounts.

What is going on?
And how do I fix this?  Or at maybe "reset" Dashboard to its initial state...

Thanks for your help.

Cyril...

...no one's biting!

I'll take a kick at it - what mac and os version are you using?

Installed any wacky non-apple widgets?

Back at you...

This is on an eMac 700MHz running 10.4.11.
My son did install at least one extra widgets (a weather thing which does not seem very wacky), and possibly one or two games.

We have 4 accounts on the computer : 2 admin and 2 with parental control.  Oddly, One admin and one p.c. account had Dashboard working OK, while the rest could not get it to work.

Since then, I changed the HD in that machine, repaired persmissions and verified the disk, and now only my son's account (with parental control) cannot run Dashboard.  Which sux because he is the only one interested in those things...

Any idea how I could uninstall any non-apple widgets and restart Dashboard from a blank slate?

Thanks for any idea you could provide.  I triede the Apple discussion forum and nothing came up.

Log in to each account and discard the following files:

/Users/~/Preferences/widget-com.apple.widget.widgetname.plist

The ~ stands for the users "short" name - the name of each Home folder. This will reset the preferences for all  widgets.

Also delete any widgets you find in:

/Users/~/Library/Widgets/

Those will be "User" widgets.

Sounds like a permissions problem - can be hard to track down - but repairing permissions and trashing preferences is a good start - and keeping third-party widgets current helps. Let me know if this helps.

Happy Mac'ing!
