I am looking at changing the failing hard drive on my 1st gen eMac (G4 700Mhz).
I think I have the actual disassembly covered (I just changed the DVD player this morning), but I was wondering:
How do you guys go about transfering data from the old to the new drive? I can't find a firewire enclosure for IDE/ATA drives anywhere...
I would get a USB 2.0 enclosure - it is just as fast as firewire 400 (as long as your Mac has USB 2.0 ports).
Another alternative is this device:

Check with LeRoy Lees cllees@mac.com. He had similar units at a better price last time I was there.

We sell the same product for about $25 - techie deal of the century, these devices are in every techs toolbox they are SO handy.
Computer Concepts in Kanata - we have them in stock.

Thanks Neil.
Unfortunately the 1st gen eMac is USB1.1 only... and I can't imagine transfering 30+ Gb over USB1.1...
I so wish there was at least one USB2 port on these machines!
Thanks Dan. I'll definitely call Doug or drop by.
I must say I can't find my way around your website though -- what brand enclosures do you carry? (Hope it's not against forum rules to discuss that)
Not everything in the store is on the website, but if you click on the USB badge - you'll see the USB-IDE converter there. The drive enclosures aren't listed, but you may call Doug first and he'll help you out. For the most part they are from A-Byte - a generic OEM, the main thing to look for is the controller chip - Oxford, Initio or Prolific are all good names.
Hope we're not breaking any forum rules!
Dan
No rules broken that I can think of!
Excellent.
Some forums can get pretty paranoid about discussing specific shops or commercial interests -- glad this is not the case here.
Btw, directron seem to have pretty good prices (thanks z) but I'd rather buy from a real shop if I can.

I just wanted to show you that you can find Firewire enclosures.
I try to support local business but I've found things at Directron that I couldn't find locally and the service has been very good. I don't know anything about Dan's shop and cannot recommend it personally.
Check your MUGOO personnal messages.
BTW I should tank everybody who provided replies and info in this thread. I ended up getting a 250Gb Seagate drive and install was pretty straightforward, if a bit long (especially since I had to open it again to get the Airport antenna back).
Now I just have to figure out what I can do with all that extra storage space...
Glad to here of your ultimate success! Did you ever get the data transferred?
Dan
I cloned the internal HD onto the new one using a FW enclosure (seems to use Prolific chipset), swapped the drives and when I restarted I had essentially the same system, with 210 extra Gb.
While internal, the 40Gb disk could not be repaired (due to its SMART status) but once I placed it in the enclosure I could verify and repair it so it looks like I have an extra 40Gb external.
