Title: Looking to install a window's media player.
Post by: TiLepre on April 17, 2007, 11:01:48 AM
I would like to know if I could install a window's media player for the new imac without having to buy an expander program.  I do currently have quicktime but it doesn't work with some of the emails I recieve.

You need Flip4Mac which is a sort of QuickTiime plug-in to allow most WMV files to play in your browser or QT Player, or VLC player which is an application that opens/converts all kinds of media files including WMV files. Flip4Mac used to be free but is now 29.99 - but the free download will allow you to play the WMV content without the ability to convert it. VLC Player is shareware, and it is a must if you have a third party DVD player that won't work with DVD Player. Good luck,

Thank you. I do have a dvd player installed that came with the computer. Also I did download the flip4mac. You stated that it will work without having to buy the additional software. Is there anything I have to do when opening a wave file or will it autamatically open it for me?  I'm sorry that I ask such silly questions but after downloading flip4mac I opened an email attachment with a wmv and it didnt open.

Flip4Mac opens most, but not all WMV-type files, i.e. WMVA (advanced ver 9) is not supported. Attached files should never be set to auto-open, even on a Mac. Save your attachment to your hard drive and try opening it by dragging it onto Quicktime Player. If the file is unreadable by QT, try the VLC player. Still not working? Let us know...

Update: new version of Flip4Mac (2.1.2.72) now handles wmva 9!
