I've been getting disconnected lately, sporadically , and I'm wondering if my phone line is causing this. We had bad cable pairs last fall but could hear noise on the line so it was obvious and I reported it to Bell so they switched tel. cable pairs. This time there's no noise. I tested the download and upload speed with Speakeasy (a download test program) and this is what I got: Download: 2520 kbps, Upload, 128 kbps. Doesn't sound right somehow. This on a HS dsl line. I'm using an Imac G5.
Any suggestions? I there's a tel number Bell techs use that removes the dial tone from the line, as well as all voltage, usually 48 volts dc. The n it's easy to test whether there's faults on the line. Anyone know this #? Anyone know if Bell charges for testing a line if you suspect there's a problem but aren't sure?
Sorry, it got posted before I could proofread.
Here's some corrections:

Since I'm not with Bell Sympatico, (using Freenet) I don't think I can rely on Bell for free anything...

Hi Jm,
I'm sorry I don't know the Bell number in question, but the download speed sounds typical for the base HS ADSL service from Bell. Using the Speakeasy.net site and timing to their NYC facility, I get around 2700kbps download. Note it's important to empty your browser cache between test runs -- otherwise I get 4000kbps download speeds reproted on subsequent timings, until I reset my browser (safari) cache, at which point it falls back to 2700kbps.
Now with regards
upload, one of course expects lower speed, since it is
asymmetric digital subcriber line (ADSL) service that Bell is providing you, but I agree, I wouldn't expect the degree of asymmetry you are experiencing. My own upload speeds varied
greatly with the Speakeasy.net/speedtest tool, and of course I had no way to do the equivalent of 'reset the cache at their end' between upload tests. Having said that, my uploads to the NYC facility were reported as 370-470kbps, or 2-3 times faster than the ones reported for you!
Just to remove any varialbles from your end, do you have a single computer directly connected to the ADSL modem? If not, it wold be worth unplugging any routers, etc, and repeating the tests with this simplified setup, to confirm that the 128kbps upload speeds are independent of your home network.
best of luck,

Here's what I use for measuring my DSL speed:

What numbers do you see?
With the posted test, at Magma, I'm getting 3.48 mbps download. That seems ok. There's no upload on this one as far as I see.
Thanks
