Title: LOOKING FOR ADVICE - PLACEMENT OF RAM CHIPS
Post by: jp on November 27, 2006, 08:20:09 PM
Have 7600/120 with 8 slots (70ns, 168 pins, DIMMS) currently installed as follows:

B4:   8 MD
A4: 32 MB

B3:   8 MB
A3:   8 MB

B2:   8 MB
A2    8 MB

B1:  16 MB
A1:   8 MB

QUESTION

1) Could I get better performance by moving some or all of the above DIMMs ?

You will get better performance if the "A" and "B" are a matched pair, it's called interleaving.
In your case I would switch the "A4" 32mb with the "A1" 8mb.  Then at least 3 pair are interleaved.

Thanks MacMoore,

I appreciate you're responding.

I'll make those changes as soon as I get home.

MacMoore

Thanks again, followed your suggestion.

The part I really enjoy in all this is taking that lid off, moving the DIMMs around, re-starting and with Apple System Profiler seeing the new locations of the DIMMs.

A for a speed increase ... there might very well be one.  It didn't slow down the computer, that's for sure.

All the best to you and yours during this festive season
